Foreigners in Turkey – The Real Cost of Deportation

What Are the Consequences of Being Deported from Turkey? (2026 Legal Guide)

A deportation (removal) decision is one of the most severe administrative actions Turkey can take against a foreign national. It is not just about being asked to leave the country; it brings significant, long-lasting legal and financial consequences.

Whether you have been detained at an immigration center, caught overstaying your visa, or involved in a criminal investigation, understanding the consequences of deportation is the first step toward protecting your rights.

1- Immediate Removal or Detention

The most immediate consequence of a deportation order is the loss of your right to remain in Turkey. Depending on the severity of the case, authorities will take one of two actions:

  • Invitation to Leave: You may be given up to 15 to 30 days to leave Turkey voluntarily. If you leave within this period, you might face milder penalties.
  • Administrative Detention: If you are deemed a flight risk, have violated entry/exit rules, or are considered a threat to public security, you will be placed in a Removal Center (Geri Gönderme Merkezi) until your deportation is executed. This detention can last up to 6 months and can be extended for another 6 months.

2- Entry Ban to Turkey (Restriction Codes / Tahdit Kodları)

Deportation almost always triggers an entry ban. The Presidency of Migration Management will place a restriction code (Tahdit Kodu) on your passport profile. The duration of the ban depends on the reason for deportation:

  • 1 Month to 5 Years: Typical for visa overstays, working illegally without a permit, or failing to renew a residence permit.
  • Up to 10 Years or Permanent: Applied in severe cases, such as involvement in terrorism, crimes, using fake documents, or posing a serious threat to public health and security (e.g., G-87, Ç-114 codes).

While an entry ban is active, you cannot enter Turkey under any circumstances unless you obtain a special "Legitimized Visa" (Meşruhatlı Vize) for specific purposes like education, health, or family reunification.

3- Administrative Fines & Financial Penalties

Deportation is often accompanied by administrative fines, especially in cases of visa overstay or illegal employment.

If you are deported, the travel expenses for your removal are ideally covered by you. If the Turkish government pays for your flight ticket, you will not be allowed to re-enter Turkey until you reimburse the government for these travel costs, even if your entry ban period has expired. Furthermore, unpaid administrative fines will keep your entry ban active indefinitely.

4- Impact on Visas, Residence Permits, and Citizenship

A deportation record leaves a permanent mark on your immigration history in Turkey.

  • Residence Permits: Any active residence permit you hold is immediately canceled.
  • Future Applications: Even after an entry ban expires, having a previous deportation record makes future tourist visa or residence permit applications highly vulnerable to rejection.
  • Citizenship: A deportation order completely halts any ongoing Turkish citizenship applications, as it violates the requirement of "good moral character" and "public order."

5- The 7-Day Rule: How to Cancel a Deportation Order

A deportation order is not the end of the road, but time is critical.

By law, a foreigner has the right to file a lawsuit in the Administrative Court to cancel the deportation decision. This lawsuit must be filed within 7 days of the deportation order being notified to you or your lawyer.

Filing this lawsuit automatically suspends the deportation process (except for terrorism or severe security cases), meaning you cannot be physically removed from Turkey while the court case is ongoing. If the court rules in your favor, the deportation order is canceled, and you can restore your legal status in Turkey.
