Adults over the age of 18 who will study at a higher education institution in Turkey or foreign individuals who do not have family residence permits but will attend primary or secondary schools can obtain a residence permit during their education.

1. How long can a study residence permit be granted?

Foreigners studying at a higher education institution in Turkey are granted a residence permit for the entire duration of their education. If a student does not graduate within the normal education period, their residence permit can be extended in one-year increments, up to the maximum duration of their education. However, once a student graduates, their residence permit is terminated. Within ten days of graduation, they must apply for a new residence permit suitable for their new purpose of stay.

2. Who can apply for a student residence permit?

Foreigners under the age of 18 who have family residence permits can attend primary, middle, and high schools without needing to obtain a student residence permit.

Therefore, foreigners under 18 years old without family residence permits and those over 18 registered in higher education institutions need to obtain a student residence permit.

Foreign nationals wishing to obtain a residence permit for educational purposes must first register at the educational institution they will attend and apply to the Turkish Representations in their country of residence or nationality with their registration documents for an educational visa.

International protection status holders do not need to obtain a student residence permit to pursue education in Turkey.

3. Can I work in Turkey with a student residence permit?

Foreign students registered in formal education programs at higher education institutions in Turkey can work by obtaining a work permit. Undergraduate and associate degree students can work part-time after completing their first year of study. Master's degree students can work from the first year onwards.

The student residence permit does not grant any rights to the parents or other relatives of the student regarding obtaining a residence permit. If these individuals are present, they must separately apply for a residence permit if they meet the requirements.
