1. How long can a short-term residence permit be granted?

Short-term residence permits in Turkey are generally issued for a maximum of 1 year at a time. However, in certain exceptional situations — such as for applicants obtaining citizenship through investment or citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus — the permit may be granted for up to 5 years.


2. Who can apply for a short-term residence permit?

To apply for a short-term residence permit in Turkey, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Staying in Turkey for tourism purposes.
  • People who want to visit for education related purposes (Turkish learning courses, higher education, student exchange, scientific research, higher education etc.)
  • Owning real estate in Turkey
  • Receiving health treatment provided you don't have a disease considered a threat to public health.
  • Establishing commercial connections or business in Turkey.
  • Not working in Turkey but investing

Foreign citizens who have one of the reasons listed above can apply for a residence permit if they meet the conditions listed below. These conditions;

3. How long does it take for my residence permit application to be evaluated?

Residence permit applications are typically processed within 90 days at most. Applicants will be notified of the decisions regarding their application within this timeframe.


4. My short-term residence permit is expiring, how can I extend it?

If you want to extend your short-term residence permit, you should apply at least 60 days before it expires. You can stay in Turkey while your extension application is processed. You'll receive a special document during the extension process that allows you to continue your residence in Turkey.

A short-term residence permit will not be granted, or if already granted, will be canceled or not extended in the following situations:

  • Failure to meet one or more of the short-term residence permit conditions.
  • Using the residence permit for purposes other than its intended purpose.
  • Having a valid deportation or entry ban decision against you.

If individuals whose applications are rejected feel the decision is unfair, they have two options: they can appeal to a higher authority or file a lawsuit in administrative courts to contest the rejection decision.

Those whose applications are rejected can object to the decision or directly file a lawsuit for annulment within 60 days of receiving the rejection notification. If the objection is not addressed within 30 days, it is considered rejected. Even if the objection is rejected, a lawsuit for annulment can still be filed.

5. In which situations is a family residence permit converted into a short-term residence permit?

  • Individuals who have resided in Turkey with a family residence permit for at least three years and have reached the age of 18,
  • Individuals who were dependent on a sponsor for their family residence permit in Turkey and whose sponsor has passed away,
can convert their family residence permits to short-term residence permits.

6. What are the documents required for a short-term residence permit?

The documents required for a short-term residence permit are as follows:

  • Original and photocopy of passport or a substitute document
  • Four biometric (ICAO standards) photographs
  • Health insurance

7. How many days are given to complete the missing documents in the application?

A period of up to 30 days may be given to complete the missing documents. If the missing documents are not completed within this period, the application will be removed from the process.


8. How much money do I need in the bank to get a residence permit?

For short-term and student residence permits, it is sufficient to declare your income; there is no need to deposit a guarantee to the bank unless specifically requested by the government. The income must be equivalent to 1.5 times the minimum wage per person.

For a family residence permit, the sponsor must have income that is at least one-third of the minimum wage per family member, but not less than the minimum wage itself.

For long-term residence permits, you need to have sufficient and regular income. This can be demonstrated by having a monthly income equivalent to 1.5 times the minimum wage per person, owning income-generating property, or having enough money in your bank account to cover your expenses in Turkey.
